HHS Office for Civil Rights has recently released a fact sheet which is first in a series of FAQs to clarify further an individual’s core right under HIPAA to access and obtain a copy of their health information. The Office for Civil Rights plan to continue to develop additional guidance and other necessary tools to ensure that all of us understand and can access our health information. They will be working with the government to produce consumer-friendly resources which include communication tools to encourage patients to access their digital health information.

It is important that all of us have access to our health information in order to better manage our care and treatment and possibly find and request corrections to errors we might find in our record. This allows all of us to take charge of our health and well-being. However, the Office for Civil Rights reports that recent studies and information from their own enforcement experiences revealed that folks face obstacles when trying to access their health information. As a result, the office is determined to ensure these barriers will change.
